Challenges on vocabulary learning:
Cambridge YLE Tests require students to have a large capacity of vocabularies. For example, there are about 400 vocabularies in the Starters level. How can young students learn them?
What may not be effective?
In order to make spelling fun, most people try to teach to memorize the vocabularies based on the hints, mirroring the Cambridge tests, to re-order the wrong-order letters to construct a sensible word. In real life, spelling is without the hints of any given scrambled letters. As a result, students may get good grades when hinted, but end up with spelling difficulties in school work when there are no letter hints.
Jolly Kingdom's research and solution:
Professor Jeanne S. Chall concluded that code-emphasis method like phonics helps young children acquire literacy ability in an effective way. (picture source:Harvard GSE)
A research conducted at Harvard University by professor Emerita Jeanne S. Chall concluded that code-emphasis method like phonics helps young children acquire literacy ability in an effective way. In Jolly Kingdom, phonics learning is integrated into Cambridge vocabularies learning in a complete and fun course via Jolly Kingdom's own Spelling series of "Jolly Spelling for Starters", "Jolly Spelling for Movers" and "Jolly Spelling Fun for Flyers".
Jolly Kingdom teaches students how to spell with a phonics foundation. Students learn to master vocabularies with phonics skills in a fun and joyful way. After finishing the Cambridge tests, students can apply the skill to learn any other subjects in real life in English.
Challenges in learning Grammar rules
Cambridge YLE Tests require young children to know dozens of grammar rules. How can young children manage this?
What may not be effective?
It is quite common to teach grammar by simply correcting children on the spot when grammatical mistakes are made, and asking children to repeat the sentence. This method may not be effective for children learning English as a second language. Children are easily confused by the grammar rules when they learn more different sentence patterns. That is the reason why many parents find that their children constantly make grammatical mistakes after learning grammar for years.
Jolly Kingdom's research and solution:
Professor Stephen Krashen stressed that language is acquired unconsciously but it is learnt consciously. (picture source:sk.com.br)
Professor Emeritus Stephen Krashen at University of Southern California contrasted the two terms of language acquisition and language learning, where language acquisition refers to students who understand the language through habitual and unconscious natural language exposure. On the other hand, language learning is a conscious learning of the forms and rules of (grammar) of the language.
On learning English as a second language, Jolly Kingdom understands language acquisition is important for oral and listening capability of our students. On the other hand, grammar rules require students to learn with grammar awareness as well as a systematically approach to lay sound foundation for our students' writing capability.
The existing Cambridge University Press series of "Fun for Starters", "Fun for Movers" and "Fun for Flyers" allows students to expose to grammar structures in an integrated approach. Children may have difficulties forming a clear grammatical structure internally by simply go through the exercise in these books. In order to internalize the grammar structure for children, James M. Bourke suggested the language awareness approach plays a crucial role. In this approach children understand grammar in a problem solving process. Jolly Kingdom develops its own series of grammar books following language awareness principle together with systematic and clear grammatical concepts, the Jolly Kingdom grammar series of "Grammar for Starters", "Grammar for Movers" and "Grammar for Flyers" internalizes grammar rules effectively for students. After completing the Golden Cambridge YLE courses at Jolly Kingdom, students have also established a solid grammar foundation that allows them to put into express themselves correctly and freely in real life, in addition to the numerous shields from the test results.

Parents feedback
Jenna Ng: Starters 15
The Cambridge YLE course is one of the most commonly recognized comprehensive English programmes. I believe there is definite help in English grammar and Primary One admission interviews. Therefore, we registered Jenna to study the Cambridge course at Jolly Kingdom. Jenna is rather good at English. With the motivation and guidance of Jolly Kingdom teachers, she becomes more interested in the subject, and does not feel the learning process dry nor difficult. I do not have to worry about her study. Since Jenna is learning well, many of my friends have been asking at which school Jenna takes her Cambridge course. At the end, over a dozen of my friends have their children taking the Cambridge course at Jolly Kingdom. We see Jolly Kingdom teaches the Cambridge course truly well.

    Cherrie Ng: Starters 15,Movers 15,Flyers 14
Cherrie has been learning English Phonics at Jolly Kingdom since her Kindergarten. She has built a good foundation from early childhood. In the beginning, we chose to take the Cambridge YLE course because of the interviews, in order to have a commonly recognized standard to demonstrate her English standard. When she moved onto Flyers, we really wanted to know her English level and identify her strengths and weaknesses so that we could focus strengthening the weak aspects. We also feel that the Cambridge YLE course has helped Cherrie learn English as a whole. During the course, there had been difficulties. Fortunately teachers at Jolly Kingdom were able to identify them and help her overcome them timely. That enabled her finally overcame her difficulties and built her confidence.

Hilary Tong Cheuk Him: Starters 15
We thought Hilary’s English was not bad. But we would like to know her level precisely. Therefore we decided to enroll her in the Cambridge YLE course. Before she started, we were not sure if she could manage the complete course. It is good that at Jolly Kingdom, learning can be achieved progressively. Hilary has become very confident of herself, and her max score of 15 shields made her love English! We certainly will continue learning Movers and Flyers, and will certainly recommend this to our friends’ children. It really helps the children a great deal.

    Po Yip: Starters 15,Movers 15
In order to prepare Po for his primary one, I enrolled him in the Cambridge YLE course. During the course, he encountered quite a few problems. He found spelling and dictation very difficult. Fortunately, Jolly Kingdom’s phonics approach helped him a lot, and enabled him to master the course quickly. I am also pleased that Jolly Kingdom delivers their Cambridge YLE course by full native English teachers, and provides an ‘English only’ learning environment, which accelerates children’s learning tremendously.

Tsoi Hei Lok: Starters15,Movers 15
Our child likes reading English books. He started learning Phonics at Jolly Kingdom since K2, and we were recommended by a friend to study the Cambridge course as well. We do not have any particular objective in taking this course except to improve Hei Lok’s English. The Cambridge course is very comprehensive. Hei Lok is now preparing for Flyers. He finds it more difficult than Starters and Movers, but he will take the challenge and sit for the exam. I think the Cambridge course at Jolly Kingdom is well structured and can help my child improve.

    Angelo Kwok: Starters 15
Angelo is very interested in English. He has been learning Phonics at Jolly Kingdom before studying the Cambridge YLE course. His English is good at school. In order to see how good he is internationally, we decided to take the Cambridge YLE Test. We also believed that it would help him with his English skills and Primary One admission interviews. Angelo was very pleased with his score after Starters. He is much more sure of himself and is eager to continue with Movers and Flyers. Many friends would like to achieve the same as Angelo and asked how he did it. We always recommend them to join Jolly Kingdom.
